Roadside warning devices: where do they go?

Dispositivos de advertencia: ¿dónde se colocan?

Simple diagrams for the federal placement rules when a commercial motor vehicle is stopped on a highway or shoulder for a reason other than a necessary traffic stop.

Not ordinary cones:No son conos ordinarios: The federal rule refers to the warning devices required by 49 CFR §393.95—commonly three bidirectional reflective triangles, with certain approved alternatives. 1Immediately: activate hazard flashersInmediatamente: activa las luces intermitentes

Keep them flashing until the warning devices are placed, and use them again while collecting the devices.

2As soon as possible: place the devicesLo antes posible: coloca los dispositivos

The federal deadline is no later than 10 minutes after stopping.

Use the pattern that matches the road and move the distant device when a hill, curve, or obstruction blocks the view.

Match the road before you place the triangles.

Distances are measured from the stopped CMV. The illustrations are simplified and not drawn to scale.

1. Two-way or undivided road: general rule

Place one device 10 feet toward approaching traffic, one 100 feet toward approaching traffic, and one 100 feet in the opposite direction.

2. Divided highway or one-way road

All three devices go toward approaching traffic: 10 feet, 100 feet, and 200 feet behind the stopped CMV.

3. Hill, curve, or obstruction within 500 feet

3. Colina, curva u obstrucción dentro de 500 pies

Move the warning device in the direction of the blocked view to a point 100–500 feet from the CMV that gives road users ample warning. Keep the other required devices in their applicable positions.

4. Fuel or flammable-material leak

4. Fuga de combustible o material inflamable

Do not light or place a flame-producing warning signal where it could cause a fire or explosion. Some hazmat vehicles may not carry or use flame-producing devices at all. Use the approved non-flame devices required for the operation.

When placement may not be required

Cuándo puede no ser obligatoria la colocación

Within a municipality's business or residential district, placement is generally not required unless vehicle lamps are required and street/highway lighting is insufficient to make the CMV clearly visible from 500 feet. Verify the complete rule and any state requirements.

Practical safety reminder

Recordatorio práctico de seguridad

The regulation gives distances, but traffic, visibility, shoulder width, weather, and personal safety still matter. Wear high-visibility clothing, face traffic when possible, stay alert, and never step into a live lane when doing so would be unsafe.
