Air Brake System
Brakes
Spanish: Sistema de frenos de aire
A braking system that uses compressed air to activate the wheel brakes on commercial vehicles. Required understanding for CDL Class A and B licensing when the vehicle is equipped with air brakes.
Why It Matters
Air brakes are standard on most commercial trucks and many trailers. Drivers must pass an air brakes endorsement test or demonstrate air brake knowledge during their CDL test. Operating a vehicle with air brakes without the endorsement is a violation.
How It Works
An air compressor builds air pressure stored in reservoirs. When you press the brake pedal, air pressure is sent to the brake chambers, which push the slack adjusters, rotate the brake cams, and press the brake shoes against the brake drums.
Example of Use
"Before leaving the yard, the driver tested the air brake system — parking brake, low-pressure warning, and brake fade."
