Careers / Carreras

Make the school decision and the career decision together.

A training program should fit the work you actually want. Compare school promises, costs, schedules, job types, home time, pay structures, and physical demands before you sign or accept an offer.

One path, two decisions

Choose the training for the career—not the advertisement.

School quality and job fit affect each other. Review both sides before committing money, time, or future wages.

01

School decisions

Verify what the program provides, what it costs, and whether it prepares you for your intended license and work.

  • Confirm the provider and curriculum meet applicable ELDT and state requirements.
  • Ask about total cost, financing terms, refunds, schedule, equipment access, and instructor time.
  • Understand what job placement claims do—and do not—guarantee.
  • Read every contract before signing.
Evaluate CDL schools

Decisión de escuela: verifica requisitos, costo total, financiamiento, tiempo de práctica, equipos y promesas de empleo antes de firmar.

02

Career decisions

Compare the complete job—not only the advertised cents per mile or annual-pay headline.

  • Compare local, regional, over-the-road, dedicated, tanker, passenger, and specialized work.
  • Ask about home time, unpaid waiting, loading duties, schedules, benefits, training pay, and equipment.
  • Match endorsements to the work you want rather than collecting them without a plan.
  • Check the employer’s safety expectations and how pay is actually calculated.

Before you commit

Questions that expose the real offer.

Ask for clear answers in writing when the answer affects cost, scheduling, repayment, or employment.

What is the full cost?

Include tuition, permits, testing, medical exam, equipment, retests, lodging, transportation, and financing charges.

How much practice is individual?

Distinguish observation, simulator time, range time, and actual behind-the-wheel driving.

How is pay measured?

Ask what counts as paid miles or hours, and how detention, layover, loading, breakdowns, and training are paid.

What happens if plans change?

Understand refund, repayment, employment-commitment, termination, and transfer rules before signing.

Use official verification

Confirm training-provider status through the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, review your state licensing agency’s requirements, and verify any employer or school claim directly.
