Should I get a CDL?

Do not start with a school. Start with the life and work you want. Answer these questions to identify what you should investigate before spending money on training.

1. Home time

I need to be home most nights. I can consider occasional nights away. I am open to extended travel.

2. Schedule

I can work early starts, long days, nights or weekends when a job requires it. I have some flexibility, but need predictability. I need a highly predictable schedule.

3. Why are you considering a CDL?

Higher income. Career stability or a practical skill. I genuinely like driving/transportation work. I mainly want a fast path into a new career.

4. Physical work

Loading, hoses, tarps, climbing or repeated stops are acceptable. Some physical work is acceptable. I strongly prefer minimal physical work.

5. Responsibility and regulation

I am comfortable with inspections, logs, safety rules, testing and professional accountability. I need to learn more about those requirements. I strongly dislike highly regulated work.

6. Local research

I have looked at actual entry-level CDL jobs near me. Not yet.

7. Training finances

I can investigate total training cost without relying on a promised salary. I would need the new job to immediately cover training/debt.
